Happy Birthday to my wife Becky. Today we left Everglades National Park traveled 140 miles to Key West Florida. Our goal was to have our picture taken next to the Furthest South Marker in the United States on Becky's Birthday. The scenery is beautiful. Speed limits are from 35 mph to 45 mph the entire trip. Go thing the scenery is nice or it would be a long trip. The Keys consist of several Islands connected by bridges. Key West being the furthest in the chain.

We stopped at Bahia Honda State Park on the way to hopefully get a campsite for the night on our return trip from Key West. We were lucky and got the last spot they had available. After checking out the site, we continued on to Key West.

We took the City View Trolley Tours. $18.00 each and was able to hop on and off all day. We got our tickets online and showed they ticket counter our smartphone receipt and received $2.00 off for ordering online, and $1.00 off for being senior each ticket.

Welcome aboard the U.S. Cost Guard Cutter USCGC Mohawk (WMEC 913). The ship is named for the Algonquin tribe of Iroquoian Indians who lived in the Mohawk Valley of New York. MOHAWK is the third cutter to bear the name. The original MOHAWK (1902-1917), a first class, 205-foot, steel revenue cruiser was built in Richmond, Virginia, and commissioned on May 10th, 1904. She was used primarily as a training ship. In October of 1917 she was struck by another vessel and sank off Sandy Hook, New Jersey.
The second MOHAWK (1935-1948), a 165-foot, “A” class cutter, was built in Wilmington, Delaware and commissioned on January 19th, 1935. She served primarily as an escort and ice patrol ship in the north Atlantic. On January 8th, 1948, MOHAWK was decommissioned and was used as a pilot boat on the Delaware River for more than 30 years. She is located in Key West, Florida.

The third and current MOHAWK is the thirteenth and last of the 270-foot “Famous” class cutters. Built by the former Robert E. Derecktor Shipyards of Rhode Island, MOHAWK was christened on September 9th, 1989. Since the time of her commissioning in March of 1991, she has served the Coast Guard in a wide variety of missions including Search and Rescue, Maritime Law Enforcement, and Alien Migrant Interdiction Operations. MOHAWK has been responsible for the rescue of more than 5,000 Haitian, Cuban, and Dominican Republic migrants and has supported as many as 756 migrants on deck at one time. MOHAWK has also seized more than 20,700 pounds of illegal drugs. This, as well as MOHAWK’s role in several search and rescue cases and numerous boardings to enforce our nation’s laws, has earned MOHAWK two Unit Commendations, the Joint Meritorious Service Award and two Humanitarian Service Awards. MOHAWK is homeported in Key West, Florida.

Key West Cemetery

The Key West Cemetery is a 19-acre cemetery located at the foot of Solares Hill on the island of Key West, Florida 33040. It is located in the northeast section of the
Old Town area of the island, and it is estimated that as many as 100,000 people are buried here, many more than the 30,000 residents who currently live on the island.

In 1847 it was established at its current location after a 1846 hurricane washed dead bodies from the earlier cemetery out of the coastal sand dunes on Whitehead Point near the West Martello Towers. The West Martello Tower (currently the site of the Key West Garden Club) is a historic martello tower and is located at 1100 Atlantic Boulevard. On June 24, 1976, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places..

An African Memorial Cemetery was dedicated beside the West Martello Tower in 2009, where slaves, ill from the sea voyage to slavery in "The New World," were buried there prior to the US Civil War.

Key West Cemetery Marker Inscription:

Key West Cemetery was founded in 1847 following a hurricane the previous year that destroyed the earlier cemetery located near present day Higgs Beach. To protect from future flooding, the 19-acre cemetery was located here on Solares Hill, the highest natural elevation in Key West. An estimated 75,000 people are interred here, divided among parcels that reflect the cultural diversity that continues to characterize the city of Key West today. The cemetery contains a historic Catholic section, Jewish section, the USS Maine Plot dedicated in 1900, and the Los Martires de Cuba, a memorial for those who fought in the 1868 Cuban revolution. In addition to these defined areas, African Americans, Cubans and Americans, rich and poor, are interred throughout. In-ground and crypt style graves range from simple concrete copings filled with soil to elaborate monuments. Plot enclosures of wrought iron, wood, or concrete were often used to mark family plots.

The marker was erected in 2005 by the Historic Florida Keys Foundation, the City of Key West, and the Florida Department of State. (Marker Number F-551), and is located in Key West, Florida in Monroe County at the intersection of Passover Lane and Angela Street. The marker is located just to the right when traveling north on Passover Lane.1891 building at the corner of Front and Duval Streets, the former Florida First National Bank, then looking southeast down Duval from Wall St.Key West Museum of Art and History

Happy Birthday, Becky at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Restaurant

We returned to the Kodiak at 6:30 p.m. Our parking pass had expired. Parking is limited on the Island. We were both tired from all the walking, but enjoyed ourselves very much. We returned back to Bahia Honda State Park for the night. We were both glad we stopped earlier and reserved out camp site. We recommend a visit to Key West Florida when you get an opportunity. One full day is enough, including a trolley tour, and some walking or bicycling.
